  • You used a backyard breeder. A REAL weim breeder wouldn’t be caught dead breeding a brown dog. Standard thought is that they are crossed with German Shorthaired Pointers. http://www.coloradoweims.com/questions.html

Since those two breeds have overlapping DNA, it could easily explain the DNA. Or, the breeder simply lied to you. Backyard breeders tend to do this.

+ Like I told you, you used a BYB, so there’s no telling what has happened. NO responsible breeder would touch a bloodline with brown dogs. DNA tests are only so accurate.

If you wanted a Weim, why would you use a backyard breeder, first, and then get what’s essentially a GSP/Weim mix, second?

The other possibility is that you do not have a “chocolate” weim. You may have a darker grey dog and neither you nor the BYbreeder can tell the difference. It’s even possible that the other pups in the litter were blue, making the gray dog look even more brown. Grey is recessive and is a Dilute brown. Dilute is dominant – if both parents were either grey or blue, it’s impossible to have a brown pup without genetic mutation or another breed.

Better keep an eye on those hips. And eyes. And watch for HOD. (all genetic problems with badly bred weims & GSP’s).

  • No it is normal, in fact – pretty much unheard of, short of a mis-mate or two impure parents. Weim puppies are born with royal BLUE eyes, not gray. The eyes can stay blue, or transition (to turquoise, then to green) then in most cases to AMBER (that’s a yellow) NOT gray.

Just what sort of DNA test was run, & how well do you understand the findings, etc.? Did they just TELL you a DNA test has been run, or did you SEE it? (AKC DNA tests take weeks & weeks to be returned, so usually the puppy is 14-16 weeks old) before the paperwork is back. Just how OLD is this “puppy”?

I maintain something isn’t right in the hen house. German Short-haired pointers can come in solid chocolate, but not pure-bred Weimaraners. The silver Weimaraner has an extremely recessive coat color, so if cross-bred, you get another color. Obviously, the mother may be silver (provided you have a good color eye) but I bet that the REAL Daddy isn’t.
