  • Mattresses require support. Some alternatives to a box spring can be found at this website;

  • Box Spring For Memory Foam

  • Hi, you can place your mattress onto a 3/4″ piece of plywood that’s supported by the slats on your bed frame and that would work fine.

    You don’t want to put a memory foam mattress onto a boxed spring at all.

    Memory foam mattresses are designed to work with a hard, flat surface such as a foundation, platform bed or bunky boards. Other acceptable support would be 3/4″ plywood, a waterbed frame or other such surface.

    Memory foam is designed to do all the giving from the top down and putting your mattress on a boxed spring would defeat the purpose.

    If the boxed spring sags under your weight, your the base foam in your mattress would assume the same shape causing a hammock effect which is terrible for your lumbar region of your back.

    Also, placing your memory foam on a boxed spring could void the warranty. Read the warranty carefully to see if this is the case with yours.

    You, weighing 185 lb. and your wife at 120 lb isn’t a problem. You only need a mattress with 5 lb. density memory foam or more and a top layer of memory foam of 3″.

    Good luck!

  • You can but there is one thing you need to consider. The function of the box spring is to act as a shock absorber to the mattress. It doesn’t offer you any comfort in itself but it prolongs the life of the mattress. If you put a new mattress on an old box spring the life of the mattress will be shorter. Considering a mattress is a significant expenditure it is probably worth your while to pay the extra and get a new box spring, because it means your new mattress will have a longer life span.

  • you dont need a box spring but you do need a piece of plywood or something to hold the mattress

  • You’ll need one of those platform beds if you don’t want to use a boxspring. You can’t put it on a regular bedframe. Or get a flat board to put over the bedframe and then put the mattress on top of it.
