Does vyvanse cause acne?

I have been on vyvanse for almost 3 months now, and I have noticed some of the worst acne breakouts I've ever had... usually when I get pimples, I can easily get rid of them with a mask and a spot treatment, but these just won't go away!

I asked my doctor if vyvanse directly caused acne and she said no, that she thought it was just lack of sleep and poor diet, but I have actually been sleeping better and eating better since taking vyvanse. I have read on hundreds of forums that tons of other people taking vyvanse have the same problem, even the 30 year olds who never had acne as teens...

This acne is also in places I've never had it before like my neck, chest and back! This is just so frustrating since I am 19 and have worse acne than when I was in high school (an occassional pimple on my chin, now its my entire face and back and chest).

Anyone know about this? Or a great way to get rid of acne?

  • According to Drugs.com, and Centre Watch.......

Vynanse (drug name: Lisdexamfetamine Dimesylate), is a noradrenaline and dopamine reuptake inhibitor.

    http://www.drugs.com/ppa/lisdexamfetamine-dimesyla...

    http://www.centerwatch.com/drug-information/fda-ap...

Acne is not listed as a side effect, though skin rashes is:

    http://www.drugs.com/sfx/lisdexamfetamine-side-eff... .

However, for another drug of the name Buproprion, and of the same class (i.e. noradrenaline and dopamine reuptake inhibitor), acne is listed as an adverse event:

    http://www.drugs.com/sfx/bupropion-side-effects.ht...

Bare in mind also that another comment on Drugs.com is the following:

"Please note - some side effects for Lisdexamfetamine may not be reported."

Thus i think you can conclude from this that acne as an adverse effect could occur on vynanse. The experience of some others, and your experience also look to be testimony to that.

And anyhow, more dopamine means more testosterone. And more testosterone often means more acne in those prone.

Perhaps you should change your doctor to one that could be bothered to do the research......it should not rocket science for a doctor. If you are otherwise happy on your current medication, you could talk to your doctor about whether or not you would be a suitable candiate for taking such as Yasmin....a pill that should counteract the testosterone/acne effect. It is not suitable for everyone, and whether you could take it or not will also depend on what meds you take, but you need a knowledgeable doctor. You could also talk to a pharmacist.....perhaps mostly more knowledgeable than doctors when it comes to drug adverse reactions and ok drug combinations.

    Best wishes.

  • Dry and/or greasy skin due to poor oil composition of the skin. Thick greasy oils clog pores, lack of oil leads to dryness and irritation. You need thin oils to moisturize while dissolving and clearing gunk in your poors. Try fish oil or seafood. 2 tsp fish oil a day or 4 servings of seafood a week. Stick it out for at least 2 months; it will take a long time to replace all your oil. Any effect after 1-2 days is temporary or random; so even if it makes you break out a little at first, you haven't given it a full try yet.

In the short term you can wash and moisturize well, but that will only go so far. Plus excessive washing can be drying and excessive moisturizing can be clogging. Use a small amount of a light moisturizer, made with oil not jelly or grease. Often that means soybean oil or mineral oil. Mineral oil means mined from the ground. So soybean oil is usually better, though mineral oil won't cause too much harm. Clean with soap and water, not a harsh acne cleanser. Even then they only work so well. So you really need the seafood.

Antibiotics aren't really good for bacteria long term, they'll come back in force after. Short term they may help. After you get off them find some kefir with acidophilus listed first or 2nd to replace the friendly bacteria they destroyed. Studies show less illness when you have these bacteria, even outside the stomach in places such as the lungs and elsewhere. You want friendly bacteria to fill the void when the antibiotics stop, not harmful ones.

In the short term you might also try 100,000+ iu retinol vitamin A (a megadose, and too much for normal use) or one of the acne drugs that is similar to retinol vitamin A. It's some minor harm to your organs, but it helps against bacteria on your skin. At least it doesn't have the other long term drawbacks to your skin that antibiotics and many scrubs do.

  • Jcat ♥ is not really correct on the cause of skin problems with Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine). Amphetamines CAN unquestionably worsen your skin and cause acne. However Vyvanse does not typically cause skin problems, especially anything too significant. However it also may be a combination of things like a regular flair-up of your acne, the medication, anxiety (which is also a potential side effect of Vyvanse).

You could consider taking a different medication like Dexedrine or Ritalin, other stimulants may have a different effect. Lisdexamfetamine is also fairly new compared to most stimulants (Dexedrine is about 120+ years old, Ritalin is 50-60 years-old) so there is not as much data about side effects.

I would not say your dermatologist is incompetent or that you need a new one. And amphetamines are NEVER used in dermatology and doctors can't keep up on everything, especially something so new that is used almost exclusively in psychiatry and neurology.

As for treatment I would go back to the dermatologist. OTC acne medication, except for very minor problems, is pointless. Topical antibiotics like Cleocin T (clindamycin phosphate) topical 1%, topical retinoids like tretinoin, and potentially oral antibiotics like tetracycline, doxycycline, and minocycline are used.

It isn't among the listed side effects, so your doctor is right. For the acne. Clean your skin gently with a mild, nondrying soap (such as Dove, Neutrogena, Cetaphil, CeraVe, or Basics). Remove all dirt or make-up. Wash once or twice a day, including after exercising. However, avoid scrubbing or repeated skin washing. Shampoo your hair daily if it is oily. Comb or pull your hair back to keep the hair out of your face. Try not to squeeze, scratch, pick, or rub the pimples. Although it might be tempting to do this, it can lead to skin infections and scarring. Try over-the-counter acne medications - like Panoxyl. If no improvement goback ask your doctor for help.
