Hi Gatita, This is the layout that I use; by long division: …………3 6 ……_________ 1 2 ) 4 3 2 ……..3 6 …….._____ ………..7 2 ………..7 2 …….._____ (The . is only for spacing.) What I’m doing is simply finding out how many time twelve may be in the first few integers of the number. Divide 43 by 12; the maximum 12 can go into 43 is 3x of 12, which is 36, for 4 is too small. Place 3 in the quotient above the column 3 is in because we are dividing from there. Now subtract the 43 – 36 and put the remainders together, taking the 2 down. (the reason I omitted 2 from the previous step is only to avoid confusion for subtraction process.) The remainders put together is 72. Now repeat the process; divide 72 by 12, which is 6. I place 6 above the column 2 is in to make up the final quotient. Hope this helps, use this setting out and there is hardly anywhere you can go wrong! NB: If you are left with a remainder, you must state it, either as: For example: 4521 / 12 ……………9 = 376 ———- ……………12 = 376*3/4 or 376 r9 as required.

nobody teaches this any more I cannot even draw the |—— sign on the screen 1) division is multiplication in reverse, and also 2)it is repeated subtraction 3) it is also a game of “Guess what” 4) long division, what you are trying to do is an “algorithm” or shorthand way to write many steps multiplication is addition many times; 4 x 3 = 4 + 4 + 4 = 12 short multiplication is learning the “times tables” and memorizing 4 x 3 = 12 Division is the reverse ; 12 divided by 4 means : 4 x ? = 12. If you remember 4 x3 = 12 then 12/4 = 3 If you do NOT remember, then division is repeated subtraction; 12 – 4 =8 (once) 8 – 4 = 4 (twice) 4- 4 = 0. (third time),end 12 /4 = 3 It gets harder with larger numbers but remember the ten times table 12 x 10 = 120 So 120 divided by 4 = (12 x 10) divided by 4 so (12/4 x 10) = 3 x 10 = 30 you just start dividing the easy part Notice that 13 / 4 = 3 with something left over , you would find that by the subtraction method now try 432/ 12 = (43 x 10 + 2) / 12 I remember 12 x 3 = 36 which is smaller than 43 and also 12 x 4 = 48 which is bigger than 43 So my first guess is 12 ( 3 x 10) = 360 but there is still 432- 360 = 72 left to be divided by 12 . 72/12 : notice 72 is smaller than 12 x 1 x10 now I can guess 72/ 12 : I remember 12 x 5 = 60 and 12 x 6 = 72 so 72/12 = 6 Now I can say 432 / 12 = ( 3 x 10 + 6) TEST IT 36 x 12 = (long hand or calculator = 432 Study the steps and ideas carefully. IT IS MUCH EASIER TO WRITE : 12 into 432 guess 12x 30 and get 360 write that under the 432 like this 432 360 —– 72 next write 12 into 72 = 6 underneath the 72 72 – 12 x6 = 0 finished that is the long hand way to do division if it did not come out “even” you would have to put in a decimal point and keep doing the same thing e-m me for more help: I assume you are a grade school student If you are in high school you should sue your old school for not teaching anything

It is difficult to “show” on Yahoo!Answers, but here is the method: take digits from the left and try to divide small chunks into the dividend. 432 4: does it divide by 12? no so we add the next digit (3): 43: does it divide by 12? yes it fits 3 times with a remainder of 7 To the 7, we tack on the next digit (2): 72 goes into 12, 6 times, with no remainder. Final answer (combine the two digits we got) = 36. with no remainder. 432 divided by 12 = 36, exactly

do 43/12, 3×12= 36, the closest you can get to it, so you’re “FIRST DIGIT=3”, but you have a remainder of that multiplication of 7, drag the 2 down to follow and you have ’72’. Do 72 divided by 12, that’s evenly 6, so your final answer is 36 without a remainder.

432/ 12 = (12) (36) / (12)

= 36
