In the problem 10 – 4 = 6, what is the correct term for the number 4?

1 Answer

  • Hello,

    First,

       10 – 4 = 6

is NOT a problem. It is a subtraction.

    According to Wikipedia:

“Formally, the number being subtracted is known as the subtrahend,

while the number it is subtracted from is the minuend.

       The result is the difference.”

    Thus in the subtraction:

       10 – 4 = 6

10 is the number it is subtracted from, it is then the MINUEND.

4 is the number being subtracted, it is then the SUBTRAHEND.

6 is the result, it is then the DIFFERENCE.

So the correct term for the number 4 is SUBTRAHEND.
