Is the french word “groupe” masculine or feminine?

Really generic word. It LOOKS feminine, but I think I recall it being tricky…I just want to know if I should say “le groupe” or “la groupe”.

Also, if you have time, I know premier is masculine, but what about deuxième, troisième, et cetera? They end with E’s, so are they feminine?

  • Groupe is masculine. Le groupe.

    premier = masculine

    première = feminiine

    deuxième = both

    troisième = both

    quatrième = both

    cinquième = both

    etc.

    example: “le deuxième groupe, la deuxième école”. It doesn’t change.

    BTW

    What Martin told you only works for Spanish: it’s nonsense in French. There is no way to accurately predict the gender of a word based on its spelling – unless it has a special feminne or masculine only ending (such as “-eux” or “-euse”, “-tion”, etc)

    examples:

    un jour (masculine)

    une tour (feminine)

    un livre (a book) (m)

    une livre (a pound) (f)

    un roi (m)

    une loi (f)

    un musée (m)

    une fusée (f)

    un mage (m)

    une cage (f)

    etc….

  • Groupe is a masuline word, and so are the other E words. In french all words ending with E are masculine.

    (and et cetera doesnt end in E!!)

    Heres the M&F french system (surely you should know this……)

    M – O, E, I, U, constanant F – only A

  • feminine

  • masc. lots of masc. nouns end in -e. deuxième, troisième are both masc. and fem.
