The idea of Miranda rights are a result of the Supreme Court case Miranda vs. Arizona. In this case, Miranda was accused of a crime. When being interrogated by the police, Miranda confessed to the crime after several hours of being questioned. Miranda's lawyer argued that this was an unfair withdrawl of information as Miranda did not know his rights as a citizen. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Miranda. This is why police officers are required to read you your rights before being formally arrested.
