What does ‘nandaiyo’ mean?

All right, so, I’ve recently gotten obsessed with the anime Ouran High School Host Club – particularly the Hitachiin twins – , and I noticed that they’ve said ‘nandaiyo’ several times… but I don’t really know what it means. So, could you help me out, please? Thank you!

  • Literally, “Nandayo” or “Nan da yo” means “What is it/that!”

    何 Nan/nani = What…?/!

    だ da = informal ‘desu’ (です) = ~to be

よ yo = particle used for exclamation (it is actually for assertions, but it have an intermediate force level).

But it can take different meanings depending on the context, e.g., What do you mean!, What was that!, What are you doing! and so on.

    Hope this help!
