What does the song “Incense and Peppermints” mean?

I love the song "Incense and Peppermints" by Strawberry Alarm Clock, but I don’t understand it. What does it all mean?

  • At the time this song was released we were all pretty much stoned all the time! LOL!

Now (I’m much older and not high) it makes no sense at all!!! But still a great tune!!!!!!!!!!

Good sense, innocence, cripplin’ and kind.

Dead kings, many things I can’t define.

Oh Cajun spice, sweats and blushers your mind.

Incense and peppermints, the color of thyme.

Who cares what games we choose?

Little to win, but nothing to lose.

    Incense and peppermints, meaningless nouns.

Turn on, tune in, turn your eyes around.

Look at yourself, look at yourself,

    Yeah, yeah.

Look at yourself, look at yourself,

    Yeah, yeah,

    Yeah, yeah.

Tune-a by the **** world in two.

Throw your pride to one side, It’s the least you can do.

Beatniks and politics, nothing is new.

A yardstick for lunatics, one point of view.

    Incense, peppermints, incense, peppermints.

    Sha-la-la, sha-la-la….

  • Incense And Peppermints

  • I think it’s about smoking ganj, incense to cover the smell and peppermints to hide it on your breath…

  • Everything in it is a smell, taste or image of the 60’s, very contemporary, the song is a snapshot of it’s time (I was there, and a friend booked them for his frat at WPI).

  • "Mean Mistreater" – Grand Funk Railroad "Mean Street" – Van Halen "Mean Town Blues" – Johnny Winter "Mean Woman Blues" – Spencer Davis Group "Woman Why You Treat Me So Mean" – Luther "Sɴᴀκᴇᴅ Boy" Johnson BQ – "Mean Mr. Mustard" – The Beatles

  • It was the drug filled sixties, so who really knows? Strawberry Alarm Clock probably did not have a clue!

  • Back in the time (1960 s) songs were a result of many (drugs) resolution and there are many examples of what this came with, E.G.
