What’s meant by “physical plant” in reference to organizational units at US American universities?

I know what the meaning of plant is, both in reference to factories or to equipment collectively. But what exactly does physical plant mean when referring to departments at US universities? The grounds and buildings …?

My apologies to Dan — I wanted to give both people who answered a thumbs up but misclicked in Dan’s case, and it seems to be impossible to undo this once it’s done. Thanks to both of you for answering.

  • Physical Plant refers to the physical upkeep of the campus. The physical plant often works on the upkeep of roads, sidewalks, and buildings. This includes administrative buildings, classrooms, and dormitories. It does not usually include the landscaping aspect of the upkeep of the university.
