Where does this quote originate from?

Where did this quote originate. Never lie cheat steal or drink if you must lie lie in the arms of some one you love if you must cheat cheat death? and any variants like it. Don’t give me movies unless that’s really the original one. I know it was in hitch, Leap year, Love is a Four Letter Word and probably a few others but who first said it?

  • Its an old Irish Drinking Toast i don’t think any one knows who originally said it as most of their culture is handed down from person to person it originally goes like

“May you never lie, steal, cheat or drink.

But if you must lie, lie in each other’s arms.

If you must steal, steal kisses.

If you must cheat, cheat death.

And if you must drink, drink with us, your friends.”

They changed it to work better in the movies to:

Never lie, steal, cheat, or drink.

But if you must lie, lie in the arms of the one you love. I

f you must steal, steal away from bad company.

If you must cheat, cheat death.

And if you must drink, drink in the moments that take your breath away

    hope this helps

Probably an old chinese proverb; I doubt highly Jesus created it, seeing as how he didn’t create much and only melded elements of other religions and faiths into his teachings. If he did exist.
