  • The difference between true north and north indicated by a compass (magnetic north). This is expressed and an angle east or west and must be compensated for when taking bearings. Mariners call declination magnetic variation instead. Declination or Magnetic variation will vary depneding on where you are on the planet and also changes due to the changing magnetic influences which cause the magnetic north pole to drift.

  • The compass needle bends toward the earth"s surface near the north pole.

The small, rocky, and cold planet was discovered in 1930 by Clyde William Tombaugh. It was the result of a search for a ninth planet beyond Neptune started in 1905 by astronomer Percival Lowell.
