Which way does the Mississippi River flow?

All my life, teachers have told me that the Mississippi River flowed north toward Minnesota…is this correct?

The river amazingly “rises” in northern Minnesota near Duluth. And just over the hill the rivers start going into the Arctic or into Lake Superior. Interesting area!

But technically speaking, all rivers flow downhill, always. Some parts of the Mississippi flow north, like when it starts to do that snakey pattern in Mississippi and Louisiana.

  • That’s absurd. Any teacher would know the Mississippi flows south to the Gulf of Mexico. I believe the truth to this matter is, you weren’t paying attention in class when “all those teachers” were trying to teach you the rules of the river.

  • Was told more than once that the mighty river flowed north in but one spot – past the French Quarter in New Orleans. Finally just followed the map and there it is – only it appears to flow north on one of its many loops in Donaldson, LA as well.

  • Your teachers are idiots. The Mississippi flows south towards New Orleans.

  • I thnk you misunderstood what a teacher said, the river begins in Minn in the north, and flows south towards the gulf.

  • My teachers told me the same thing. It didn’t sound right, so I looked it up …loooooooong before the internet was invented. Sometimes people repeat what they have heard before checking it out. Teachers fall into this category sometimes. That doesn’t make them stupid. It makes them human …just like all the humans who believe everything they read on the internet.

  • your teacher needs to go back to school.. it flows south into the gulf of mexico.

  • definetly flows south
