Why did jamestown adopt the headright system?
It needed labourers to wirk the land.
The headright system began in Jamestown, Virginia in 1618. It was seen as a solution to the lack of workers in the lands considering that the tobacco economy required large plots of land with many workers. The headright system also served to attract new colonists because people were given land in exchange for settling and working on it.
It was used as a way to attract new settlers to the region and address the labor shortage. With the emergence of tobacco farming, a large supply of workers was needed. New settlers who paid their way to Virginia received 50 acres of land.
