Since General Motors is now making a profit and almost done paying off government loans, will Pontiac be once again GM’s performance brand? Can’t GM only make trucks/Big SUV’s for GMC and not Chevrolet and Cadillac? Cadillac and Buick are both luxury brands now, can’t GM merge those two brands together to save even more money and be able to have a 4th brand? What do you guys think?
“will Pontiac be once again GM’s performance brand? “
This is not at all a good idea. Pontiac, at the end, had a very bad reputation. The “performance brand” reputation was all but gone. The were known for poor quality, very poor fit and finish, excessive body cladding, old architecture, and the bane of the company’s existence, the Aztek. To re-introduce Pontiac to a generation who knew these cars, rather than original GTO or Firebird/Trans Am, would be suicide. Pontiac has essentially been absorbed into Chevrolet, which does have a history of performance with vehicles such as the Corvette and the Camaro, and soon, the Chevy SS (both the Pontiac G8 and the Chevy SS are rebadged Holden Commodores – Holden is GM’s Australian subsidiary).
“Can’t GM only make trucks/Big SUV’s for GMC and not Chevrolet and Cadillac?”
In this, you’re combining two different classes of vehicle. As far as trucks go, the Chevy Silverado is known more as an entry level truck. In addition, along with the Suburban and Tahoe, Chevy products sell in higher volume than GMC. By comparison, the GMC Sierra and the Yukon are better equipped, offering more standard features. It would be like combining Chrysler and Dodge. The 300 and the Charger are basically the same car, but have vastly different markets. Also keep in mind that GMC is typically sold alongside Buick, whereas Chevrolet can have standalone dealerships.
“Cadillac and Buick are both luxury brands now, can’t GM merge those two brands together to save even more money and be able to have a 4th brand?”
Although Cadillac and Buick are both marketed as luxury cars, they are two totally different classes of automobiles. Buick is entry level, offering less expensive vehicles, albeit slightly lower quality, than the Cadillac brand. Cadillac is building a world-class product, but such a product costs a lot more, and is marketed towards a different buyer. Combining Buick and Cadillac would be no different than combining Toyota and Lexus, Nissan and Infiniti, or Honda and Acura. They may share underpinnings, and some components, but the similarities stop there.
Hope this helps.
I have owned 5 Pontiac’s; 2 1980’s Trans Am’s and 3 2004-2006 Vibe’s
I would agree with most of the feedback above when considering my Trans Am vehicles. Both of the Trans AM vehicles I owned were utter garage. Manufacturing quality was abysmal. I once recall the driver side mirror falling out and cracking on the ground while I was parked and not touching the mirror. My muffler fell off once while driving down the road. The paint was garbage and the engine’s were lousy.
With that being said I need you guys to know that the Pontiac Vibe’s I have owned (all 3) have been Terrific. Literally the best car’s I’ve ever owned. I was an avid Honda Civic driver until I found the Vibe.
The Vibe is technically a Toyota corolla (Matrix) at a discount because of the Pontiac name. It’s a great deal! It’s very well manufactured, gets great gas mileage, is very reliable and has a ton of cargo space. It’s functional requires very little maintenance. I wish Pontiac would come back if for nothing else, to bring back the Vibe. Sadly, even the Matrix has been discontinued though so my final answer is that Pontiac will never return… that would be my guess.
It’s very well built.
Pontiac Coming Back
I m a big Pontiac fan and lament the loss of the brand. If for nothing else my 02 bird is the most reliable car I ve ever owned. Still going at 158k it shows what Pontiac could of been. While saddened by the demise of the brand I really wasn t too surprised. Was anyone? By the time Pontaic was axed the classic cars of yesteryear: the Firebird, Grand Prix, Bonnevile, GTO, and others were long gone. Cars like the Vibe, G3,5, and 6 were forgettable to say the least, and EVERYONE wanted to forget the Aztek. Let s face it, the glory days of Pontiac were long gone by 2010. I personally can t see the Pontaic brand as a whole ever being resurrected. There s no demand for it. Americans are now clammering to buy junky Kia s and there s even talk of China building cars. The Kia Soul makes the Pontiac Aztek look like a full size luxury car IMHO. The only thing I can possibly see is an insanely priced limited edition Trans Am (based on the Camaro platform) possibly being built and marketed through Chevrolet one day, of course with it directly competing with the Camaro the possibility would be dicey at best.
Pontiac and Saturn can defantly come back. As long as GM gets back to were they want to be and would like to bring them back. Lets pretend that GM is no longer broke and is doing well now hetter than before. That doesn’t mean they want to spend the money to start production of these cars again. Some of the biggest compaines out there like GM don’t like to spend more than they have to even if the money is there. A lot of times it really has nothing to do with do they have the money again. When ford decided to stop making Mercury they only had 4 models left and no one was buying them anymore. So for them it was a waste of time and money to keep Mercury around. GM did the same thing with Oldsmobile in 2004. So I don’t know what the future holds for a return of Pontiac and Saturn, but just think of the new body style designs these cars would hold today. I think it would be worth it for them to give it another try. Especially Saturn’s.

Will Pontiac Come Back?
Since General Motors is now making a profit and almost done paying off government loans, will Pontiac be once again GM’s performance brand? Can’t GM only make trucks/Big SUV’s for GMC and not Chevrolet and Cadillac? Cadillac and Buick are both luxury brands now, can’t GM merge those…
UM NO!!! Pontiac will never come back. Its gone BYE BYE just like SAAB, Hummer, Oldsmobile & now Pontiac. Buick isnt a luxury brand nor will it ever merge with Cadillac. Not in the same group period.
Usually once a car make has gone bye bye, it never comes back.
Pontiacs cars were lameazz and just not very appealing to most people. They tried too hard to be a “cool” car brand. The Grand Prix is so boring looking! Nobody likes Pontiac. My sister had a 2001 Montana it was the biggest pile of shiz ever! I will never own a Pontiac! ever!
pontiac needs to comeback now! this is the perfict time . chevy is soooo boring!
